Large numbers of Megasoma elephas

I went to Mexico a while back and only saw some dead Megasoma specimens at the nature center museum area. Saw a boatload of iguanas though.

What was the reasoning behind giving Megasoma actaeon johannae (M. rex) species status?  It seems to me, that rex is indeed a ssp. (or just a morphological variant) of actaeon.

That's it?  Just a tiny structural difference in one of the tarsal segments?  By that logic, people with different hair and eye colors could be classified as different species!
