Binx345
So I am new to beetle keeping and this site. I have some larva, people think they are either Dynastes titylus or Xyloryctes jamaicensis. All photos of those 2 larva look very much alike. Also, the rhino beetles look a lot like Japanese beetle larva. Is there an easy way to tell these apart? Also does anyone every ship/sell the beetle pupaa??
Oak
u can ship beetle pupa, but the chances of them dying is very high..
Binx345
So then NOBODY should ship pupa!
Acro
Normally eggs, larvae, or beetles are shipped, not pupa.
Beetle-Experience
By "Japanese beetle" do you mean Popillia japonica ? - or - Rhino beetles from Japan ?
Binx345
No one has answered my query as to how to tell the larva apart - dynastes tityus, dynastes granti, Popillia japonica, or Xyloryctes jamaicensis apart? yes I meant the japanese beetle popillia, as it looks just like a very young dyanstes/xylorcytes. Beetle-Experience
Cetonids will almost always crawl on their backs and they are a bit more rounded and thicker at the back end. We don't have any native cetonids that will come anywhere close to the size of our large Dynastinae larvae. I put this together a while back, for basic comparison: http://bugguide.net/node/view/370049 Rhino larvae do not crawl on their backs. Now, between X.j. and D.t. - that would be a little more difficult : http://bugguide.net/node/view/1017533/bgimage Basically, you should be ok unless someone sends you a box of mixed larvae from around the US
Beetle-Experience
Can you post a good pic of a close-up head shot of your larvae?
Binx345
This is all I have at the moment. Video of my 2 larva. I will check those links out now! Thanks
Binx345
I still do not see a difference between X.J and D.T. Is it the big spots, little spots, or the black head & mouth parts? By the way I found these 2 larva so thats why its bewteen X.J. and D.T.

Xyloryctes larvae lack dense setae that are present in tityus, making them look more smooth compare to tityus.
Binx345
So I looked at the 3 segments behind head capsule. There is setae on the 1st segment, but not the 2nd or 3rd, then setae starts again. All the setae on the entire body are of the same length and thickness. Compare : D. tityus http://bugoftheweek.com/blog/2013/1/7/hercules-hercules-beetle-idynastes-tityusi-missing-link-and-video X. jamaicensis http://bugguide.net/node/view/1062299/bgimage
Binx345
Aww, looks like I have X.j and I was really hoping for D.t. Well I may try to get a D.t. pupa from somebody on here.
