Greatwun Posted May 1, 2014 Report Posted May 1, 2014 I love these little gems. I only find them in May-June when the saw palmetto flowers are in bloom. The colors are amazing. " Quote
LarvaHunter Posted May 1, 2014 Report Posted May 1, 2014 Really nice! That's a short window for catching them! Quote
Greatwun Posted May 1, 2014 Author Report Posted May 1, 2014 Thanks guys. And yes I'm gonna try to find more and attempt to breed them. Quote
Lucanus Posted May 1, 2014 Report Posted May 1, 2014 Nice find! I received some of these from FL last year (or maybe it was the year before that), but failed miserably at breeding them Adults lasted for only a week or less for some reason, and the larvae I got from the adults failed to pupate successfully. Hope this doesn't happen to yours! Quote
Amici Con Coleotteri Posted May 1, 2014 Report Posted May 1, 2014 Pretty little guys! Good luck with finding more and breeding them! Quote
Greatwun Posted May 2, 2014 Author Report Posted May 2, 2014 This adult actually died the same night and I'm not sure why. I'm gonna collect a few more and see if I can get them to breed. I wonder if I'm doing something wrong or if these beetles are just difficult to keep alive. Quote
Trailblazr80 Posted May 2, 2014 Report Posted May 2, 2014 Could it be their diet? Do they feed off of pollen? Quote
Greatwun Posted May 3, 2014 Author Report Posted May 3, 2014 I don't know if it was diet. It died only a few hours after I captured it so could it have starved that soon? Also sometimes I set out ripe slices of oranges and I find other species of Euphoria beetles feeding on them. Quote
Greatwun Posted May 11, 2014 Author Report Posted May 11, 2014 Seems like there are two color forms in my area. The normal emerald form and a "Red" form. I have never seen the Red form documented before. Reminds me of Chrysina gloriosa and its Red form that occurs in the Davis Mountains in Texas. Quote
Greatwun Posted May 11, 2014 Author Report Posted May 11, 2014 Thanks! I'm working on a really nice display box for them and other flower beetles collected in Florida Quote
Amici Con Coleotteri Posted May 11, 2014 Report Posted May 11, 2014 Thanks! I'm working on a really nice display box for them and other flower beetles collected in Florida Wow! Well if you have ample supply and time I'd certainly pay whatever it's worth to you for a nice display of my own. Quote

Amici Con Coleotteri Posted May 11, 2014 Report Posted May 11, 2014 Cool! Thanks! Have fun catching more! Are you having any better luck with keeping and breeding them? Quote
Greatwun Posted May 12, 2014 Author Report Posted May 12, 2014 Unfortunately no. They live only for a short time, at least in captivity. Most die within the first two days. It's sad because I really like this colorful species and I was looking forward to breeding the Red form. Quote
Greatwun Posted May 12, 2014 Author Report Posted May 12, 2014 It's very fun to catch them. I have to search flowers for a while. I only find about 1-2 per hour. When I do find one on a flower my heart starts racing. Many times they fly away before I can even get close enough! It's one of my favorite species to look for in Florida along with Dynastes and Strategus. Quote

Greatwun Posted May 12, 2014 Author Report Posted May 12, 2014 I used to catch tiger beetles too. Sadly I see less and less every year. When I was younger I would get nice large jewel beetles in my backyard as well and now I haven't had one fly in the yard in a very long time. Quote
Greatwun Posted February 27, 2015 Author Report Posted February 27, 2015 Thanks! They are small but the colors are remarkable. Quote
