Satanas Posted December 15, 2013 Report Posted December 15, 2013 i didn't realize you could find dynastid larvae in upright trees haha Quote
LarvaHunter Posted December 15, 2013 Report Posted December 15, 2013 The picture you took of them in their natural habitat is great. Spectacular find! Quote
Greatwun Posted December 15, 2013 Author Report Posted December 15, 2013 i didn't realize you could find dynastid larvae in upright trees haha Actually the only times I have ever found them were in trees that were upright. I've gone through decaying oak that is laying on the ground and never found even one larva. Quote
Greatwun Posted December 15, 2013 Author Report Posted December 15, 2013 The picture you took of them in their natural habitat is great. Spectacular find! Thanks man. Found lots of stumps with large fecal pellets inside but no larvae. Finally came across one that had some inside. At first I thought it was Dynastes tityus. Quote
Lucanus Posted December 16, 2013 Report Posted December 16, 2013 Congratulation, man! I knew you could do it! Man...those larvae are HUGE! They look much bigger than mine Quote

Bill Myers Posted December 16, 2013 Report Posted December 16, 2013 [...] Looks like I'll be mixing up my collecting methods a bit... Yup. Come the spring and summer, looks like I'm gonna' be concentrating on the rotted, upright trees, too! LOL Cheers. Quote
Markelangelo Posted December 16, 2013 Report Posted December 16, 2013 Those are incredible! Thank you for posting the habitat pictures as well! It gives novice hunters a better idea of what sort of place to look to find some beautiful beetles! Quote
Greatwun Posted December 16, 2013 Author Report Posted December 16, 2013 Thanks guys I hope it helps you to find them. But finding the right tree can be difficult. This particular one would not tip over. I'm glad it wasn't too high so I could still check inside of it. Quote

Lucanus Posted December 16, 2013 Report Posted December 16, 2013 i didn't realize you could find dynastid larvae in upright trees haha D. tityus can also be found in upright trees. lol Quote
Greatwun Posted December 16, 2013 Author Report Posted December 16, 2013 D. tityus can also be found in upright trees. lol That's what I'm always looking for using this method but instead I get P. truncatus lol. Quote
Lucanus Posted December 16, 2013 Report Posted December 16, 2013 That's what I'm always looking for using this method but instead I get P. truncatus lol. I've mostly found them at the tree cavity that was at the base of upright trees so you might want to give it a shot if you find one Quote
Greatwun Posted December 16, 2013 Author Report Posted December 16, 2013 I've mostly found them at the tree cavity that was at the base of upright trees so you might want to give it a shot if you find one Thanks I will try this. I've been checking in the higher cavities within the tree so maybe that's why I'm not getting any results. Quote
