Oak
I heard that this species pupate upwards, but one of mine pupated side ways, is this normal?
Johnboy
never had them, but i would like to try this species...
wizentrop
I think this depends on the container you are keeping them in. I used to have them pupating upwards all the time, and I was using tall containers.
Hypsibius
On the subject of this species, how long did your larva of this species take to enter the stage of pupation? Sorry if I'm going off topic.
wizentrop
In my breeding it took the larvae 8 months to complete their growth. They are fast relative to other dynastids.
Oak
yes around 7-8 months
Hypsibius
Ah, I see. I'm just curious about when my A.dichotoma larvae are supposed to pupate. They're both in the mature L3 stage apparently, and I've had them for around a month and a half I believe.
Oak
usually they pupate when the season comes, which is usually around march-june
Hypsibius
On the subject of A.dichotoma, I happened to catch a glimpse of one of my larvae earlier and their abdomen appears to have gotten quite dark in colour. Is this indicative of anything?
Bill Myers
Can you get a photo of the larva so that we can take a look at it?
Hypsibius
On second thoughts, comparing it to my other larva, it was probably just me. I think it was just the lighting at the time. However, one of my larvae is has a comparably more yellowish hue to it than the other one. Is this just a general colouration thing or anything else? I heard somewhere larvae start to turn yellow around the time they get ready to pupate. Anyway, I attached an image: Â Â Sorry it's not the best quality. Oak
if you see dark circles at the bottom of the container, leave them be. they are making pupal cells/ ready to pupate.
Hisserdude
Yep they turn yellow when they are going to pupate soon.
Hypsibius
Ah, I thought so. I'll definitely leave them be now. Thank you very much.
