Ryan H Posted February 24, 2013 Report Posted February 24, 2013 My male Rhino beetle has finished his pupation cycle, and has not dug himself out of the dirt yet. He is moving around a bit, and has turned himself upside down. Is it safe to dig him out of there, or do I have to wait? Quote
a.ojala Posted February 24, 2013 Report Posted February 24, 2013 I would Waite a little bit, for his shell to harden. But if you must get him out I would be very careful not to move him around to much. Which specie of beetle is it by the way? Quote
Ryan H Posted February 24, 2013 Author Report Posted February 24, 2013 I believe it is Trypoxylus dichtomus, according to another forum member here, and pictures online. How will I know his shell is hardened? Thanks for the help! Quote
a.ojala Posted February 24, 2013 Report Posted February 24, 2013 It's shell should change color and it should become more active. Quote
a.ojala Posted February 24, 2013 Report Posted February 24, 2013 Are you located outside the United States? Quote
Matt Posted February 24, 2013 Report Posted February 24, 2013 If he is freshly emerged from the pupa he will spend a few more weeks just sitting in his cell. If you dig him up before he is ready he will just attempt to dig back down and hide himself again. When he is mature he will dig himself to the surface and start wandering around on top. Quote
Dynastes Posted February 25, 2013 Report Posted February 25, 2013 How many days ago did he become an adult? Quote
