Darkling Beetles

Acro

Cerambycidae
Will darklings feed on beetle jelly?

If yes, do they seem to like it?

Does beetle jelly seem to have any affect on them (longevity, egg laying, etc.)?

Yes but darklings should also be fed dog or cat food, dead crickets, etc., even the so-called protein beetle jellies will lead to their eventual starvation and death if employed as the only food.

Beetle jelly is a source of sugar, moisture, and maybe trace amounts of minerals and vitamins if they were added to the jelly and if they haven't degraded completely. The majority of the protein found in the jellies would probably be the gelatin used.

I've noticed that long-lived, sap-feeding beetles are unable to maintain their mass on a diet of beetle jelly and I'm pretty sure that it's an insignificant source of anything but water and a little bit of sugar.

Man, I better feed my darklings some dog food, I've been throwing in my empty beetle jelly cups in there as scraps. Good stuff.
