Peter Clausen
Phileurus is a rarely collected beetle in the United States. Photos on bugguide suggest that males have horns like this: http://bugguide.net/node/view/260447/bgimage However, the specimen I caught a few weeks ago in Arizona has very lobed horns (see attached, below). Can anybody describe the sexes of these beetles? Thank you in advance!
Dynastes
That photo on bugguide is a female. Whoever wrote it was a male had no idea what they were talking about. Your beetle is a male.
Peter Clausen
I feared as much. I couldn't find any of P. truncatus on bugguide.net that showed lobed horns to the same degree as this specimen I caught. Thanks Orin!
