Brian
I'm not a bug guy and I just moved to S Oregon. This thing is still squealling in a coffee can.
Dynastes
It's a longhorn beetle probably from the genus Prionus. The grubs of this type of longhorn feed inside solid rotten logs. They take a few years to mature and then only live a few weeks as beetles.
Peter Clausen
I live in Oregon too. These are not uncommon through much of the state. I think these beetles are also sometimes referred to as root borers.
ando
You guys are lucky. The last prionus in Estonia was found more than 50 years ago.
