What kind of beetle is this?

Gale

Egg
Hey, I'm from Hampshire in the UK. I found a beetle in my house, near the window. It was about one inch long, a kind of dull brownish red, with a black head and black legs. It was smooth and a little shiny, without any patterns, marks or spots, but slight striped "verticle" ingrains in its back. Its underside was smooth and black. It didn't seem to be furry anywhere.

I didn't see it fly (I didn't really even see it crawl, it might have been dying), but it might have been able to fly. My dad released it to the wild before I thought to take a picture, so here's my lovely little MS Paint rendition from memory:

Any thoughts?

One of these?

Thanks, but it's not. Serropalpus barbatus is too thin, and too brown. This one was a little more red than that.

The picture I have is red and black like your drawing. I was just taking a stab in the dark from color, size, and location.
