Unsuspected larvae

Last fall I found a bunch of Allomyrina dichotoma larvae (L3) and put 25 in one 50 liter container and another 25 in a second 50 liter container. They made pupa cells in late April and then my ship had to go out to sea so I left my wife in charge. As the adult beetles emerged in May she removed them in put them in individuals cases. I came home yesterday and went to get rid of the old substrate and to my surprise I found a lot of L1 and L2 larvae in the container. What do you think happened ? My wife was diligent checking everyday and removing beetles as they emerged and even if she missed one it take 3 weeks or some before they are really capable of breeding.

My guess is spontaneous generation did not occur, also that the larva didn't regress back to a previous state. I know my girlfriend would tell me she checked everyday but I have doubts if she would. I'm not trying to raise an attack, I'm sure your wife is great. I think men tend to favor bugs more than women, not always but generalities still exist. I assume a pair mated, a laid. It'd be perfect for the female since she'd be attracted to the substrate that contained her species fecal matter.

Either way, I assume you have a few adults and now some babies. Congrats! Sounds super successful no matter what happened!

Thanks muddymire, she might of missed a pair and the mated and laid as you said. I hope I can have as much success with my Dhh

So I sorted through all my substrate and I have 166 larvae. I have no idea what I am going to do with them. Learned a lesson here.

Congrats on all the larvae!
I would love to get rid of a lot of them and not care about the money, but I am in the Navy stationed in Japan. I can't get rid if them here because the kids want adults and the more serious beetle people in Japan don't have much interest in them
