Protein?

Hi,

I have been feeding all of my inverts (that don't eat crickets) apple slices. And it has been brought to my attention that apples aren't the best for protein. So what sorts of things could I give my inverts to give them their needed protein?

I have beetles (darklings, eleodes, Z. morio, dynastes, Lucanus, and such that eat fruit mainly) and then other assorted inverts (isopods, true insects that suck juices from fruit)

So what could I give them all for protein?

well..you could maybe give them other fruits than appples..i think dynastes love bananas the most.

i once gave dynastes mangos and they seem to love that too

i'm going to try giving them fruit mix

Beetle jelly has good protein in it plus you avoid changing the rotten fruit so often and all the fruit flies and mites. After using it I'll always avoid using fruit at all costs. I know Dynastes and Lucanus love it, I don't know much about your others though but I'm *assuming* that if they like fruit they should also be willing to eat jelly but don't hold me to that. I'm sure others here could extend more on that.

I haven't had any problems with mites or flies yet, but fruit is a bit annoying how it dries out and everything.

Does the jelly not go bad?

Well, just got the no-go on the jelly...

Any other ideas on things to give beetles and other fruit loving insects that would have more nutrition than apples? Maybe bananas but they rot way too fast.

maybe if you can put some fruits in the blender and blend them. Then, get a sponge and soak the sponge with the juice?

Well, what other fruits would have the nutrients that the inverts would need? I was told on arachnoboards that fruits don't have much protein value.

try giving them mashed avocados with some maple syrup or honey in it and see how it goes. Avocados have protein

Don't avocados go bad extremely quickly after cut?

Brown sugar would be for sweetness correct?

Might have to try that then.

Does anyone else worry about this? Or do you all think apples and such would be fine without the need to worry?

For me, i think giving them only 1 or 2 kinds of food is not good.

Like your parents say, eat healthy.

so i think giving them different varieties of food is good.

I heard avocados have protein and apples have 1% calcium.

I am going to pick up dog food, for the stuff that will eat it like my darklings and isopods.

Then I am going to try avocados with brown sugar, peaches, carrots, and the apples. I also have oats laying around here somewhere I could use... I may also pick up a couple cuttlebones for calcium and split it apart and put little chunks in all my containers.

Any other recommendations on food sources? Or should that be enough?

Alright, sounds like a plan

I am also going to keep an eye out for nutrient powders at the local pet stores and maybe see about mixing that in with the fruit so the fruit have more nutrients. Like maybe the cricket gut loads or whatever they are.

I got apples, avocados, peaches, carrots, figs, raisins, cuttlebone, fish flakes, hermit crab pellets, cat food, and oats so far.

The cat food has 34% protein, the hermit crab food has 45% protein, and the fish food is high in a bunch of nutrients including protein.

The Eleodes are completely going nuts

They are trying to carry full raisins and pieces of fruit around and have eaten quite a bit already. They are so funny to watch right now

Most things go crazy for fish food products, flakes or pellets. I like the latter because subsequent mold issues are easier to manage.

I am giving them both

The Eleodes love the flakes the best so far, they carry the food they want out of the dishes into a corner and eat it

Or most of the stuff is too big for them to move so after ten or so minutes of trying to move it they give up and just eat it there in the dish

One of the Eleodes was latched onto the side of the dish trying to carry the whole thing away, it was so funny and cute at the same time

She was there for a good half hour and then gave up and just starting eating the stuff.
