Actually the only times I have ever found them were in trees that were upright. I've gone through decaying oak that is laying on the ground and never found even one larva.i didn't realize you could find dynastid larvae in upright trees haha
Thanks man. Found lots of stumps with large fecal pellets inside but no larvae. Finally came across one that had some inside. At first I thought it was Dynastes tityus. The picture you took of them in their natural habitat is great. Spectacular find!
Yup. Come the spring and summer, looks like I'm gonna' be concentrating on the rotted, upright trees, too! LOL[...] Looks like I'll be mixing up my collecting methods a bit...
I definitely will. These seem like L3 and I'd be surprised if they got any bigger but it's only December.Very nice series of photos. And very healthy looking larvae!
This makes me very jealous..
Thanks for sharing. Keep us posted about the larvae's growth - I am curious to see the size of the adults!
They are L3 and judging by their coloration, they might get a little biggerI definitely will. These seem like L3 and I'd be surprised if they got any bigger but it's only December.
D. tityus can also be found in upright trees. loli didn't realize you could find dynastid larvae in upright trees haha
That's what I'm always looking for using this method but instead I get P. truncatus lol.D. tityus can also be found in upright trees. lol
I've mostly found them at the tree cavity that was at the base of upright trees so you might want to give it a shot if you find oneThat's what I'm always looking for using this method but instead I get P. truncatus lol.
Thanks I will try this. I've been checking in the higher cavities within the tree so maybe that's why I'm not getting any results.I've mostly found them at the tree cavity that was at the base of upright trees so you might want to give it a shot if you find one![]()
