Noisy Trogidae

[Dynastes]

I got a half dozen of these last year and have picked them up a number of times and they've remained quiet. However, the other day I picked up one and it was making strange squeaking noises like mad (sort of frog like and nothing like the sqeaking of rhinoceros beetles though possible formed the same way with the spiracles). Anybody keeping Trogidae?

I catch them very often where I live, I find it interesting they pull in their head like a turtle and stay still. I don't feel like they are clean though to handle ( just my opinion) I can catch them for you if you want. You already helped me with your book.

They seem to come from the ground because every time that I see them they are at the bottom of my uv sheet just sttting still.
