Mold on dowels?

In an attempt to make kinshi, i bought some king oyster mushroom dowels. When i received them however, most of the dowels were covered in blackish/brown looking things which i assume it's mold. I contacted the seller and he said not to worry because mold is usually green which i think is BS. But just to make sure here is a pic.

Yeah, I'd be a little suspicious, too.

I've got some left over King Oyster dowels in the refrigerator that I've had for about 6 months. I just checked and there are NO black spots on them.

I'd try a making a couple of Kinshi jar test batches and see if they mold over.

Or, you could just get some logs and use the plugs in them. I've noticed that logs are more forgiving and don't mold over like a Kinshi jar will.

My dowels don't look like that either.

I'm in the middle of trying Daniel Ambühl's kinshi making method for the first time -- but with oak shavings and Phoenix Oyster dowels from Everything Mushrooms. I wish I could get those cool beech shavings he uses.
