Mixing protein into the substrate

Has anyone tried mixing actual powdered protein into the substrate to see if this give bigger beetles? It's something I've been thinking about and I am going to do a few experiments.

Yes, there are a few kinds you can try but it only works for certain species and doesn't work better for any than dog food but costs a whole lot more.

i was thinking about fish farm pellets..i have never heard of them being tried.....

Fish pellets and fish flakes are not powdered protein (that was what you asked about), and of course they've been tried and overall are no different from dog food.

Of course, it's a very forgiving species.

mixing the protein directly into the substrate might also create a great breeding ground for mites as well, and they would be much less contained than adding the dog food pellet to the top of the substrate.

Ok, looking at it from a different angle, has anyone experimented with housing larvae in actual powdered protein? Daft idea maybe, but has it ever been tried?

Hi Orin, i mean a coarse powdered protein, such as kelp or soya or whey????? Has it been done before?
