If the distribution of elaphus extends into Canada, it would likely only be into a few areas of far southern Ontario (and possibly Quebec), although I've not heard of any confirmed records of this species in Canada. Here's a range map for elaphus (based on habitat suitability) -I’m from Canada, where Lucanus elaphus are apparently native. However I’ve never seen one of these beetles in my life. Does anyone know what part of Canada they can be found in?
Ok thank you! I’m from Alberta and was hoping to go herping and see some but I guess that probably won’t happenIf the distribution of elaphus extends into Canada, it would likely only be into a few areas of far southern Ontario (and possibly Quebec), although I've not heard of any confirmed records of this species in Canada. Alberta is much too far north and west for elaphus.Ok thank you! I’m from Alberta and was hoping to go herping and see some but I guess that probably won’t happen![]()
There were a recent paper confirming them to be in Michigan and Iowa. Canada is certainly possible but it would be extremely difficult to find one thereIf the distribution of elaphus extends into Canada, it would likely only be into a few areas of far southern Ontario (and possibly Quebec), although I've not heard of any confirmed records of this species in Canada. Its strange that they are legal here then, if they aren’t native.Alberta is much too far north and west for elaphus.
I think Canada's regulations regarding non-native insects have always been rather relaxed, as compared to the US?Its strange that they are legal here then, if they aren’t native.
The map I posted indicates areas of habitat suitability ranging from high to low, but not necessarily places where elaphus has been recorded. The dots however, indicate the locations of known population clusters.Connecticut?! Never knew that!
I better get searching.
