They won't be out this year for at least a few more weeks. They usually come out around the same time the monsoons start and we've been really short on rain down here.
From what I've heard, they're actually not too difficult to rear in captivity, so far as longhorns go. Undoubtedly, hobbyists have made further improvements to the rearing process in the 20 years since the above paper was written. There's also a bit of info on them in McMonigle (2012), pp. 181-182.
