Is my wood done fermenting?

I have been fermenting Traeger wood pellets for about a month now, and it has turned color from yellow to dark brown. It is at normal temperature now, but it was only hot for about a week or so. Is it fermented yet?

Thanks in advance!

That sounds like it still needs a little more fermenting or composting. It should smell earthy and not give off odors that suggest it still has some volatile compounds.

Yeah, it's smell first, then color - there is a sweet spot though.. you could ferment it too long and end up with dirt.

It should smell earthy / mushroom-y and if you get an ammonia smell you need to stir it more often.

Thanks, hope I don't ferment it THAT much!

Will keep smelling it till it smells earthy!

Try it with one larva before you go ahead and change all the substrate to make sure they find it acceptable. The last thing you want to do is switch them to new substrate, only to find they don't to eat it.

All I really have that will eat it is click beetle larva, I am testing it out on one right now, hopefully it likes it!
