Invertebrates-Magazine August 2024 Ed. notes

  • Our Immortal article is by Danish invertebrate editor and author Tom Larsen.
Black leather-leaf slug captive breeding and care is described and an organic pitfall trap
for meat eating beetles is reviewed with counts attached. A short safari in Niagara was
surprisingly fruitful for a northern trip, especially in the spring and in an urbanized area,
while the Orlando Garden bed safari was expectantly successful. A cuttlefish breeding
program at the city aquarium was a fascinating find.

  • In July I set up a display at a Bug Day in Youngstown, Ohio through Millcreek
Metroparks. I had previously set up a display every other year starting in the mid 1990’s
and terminating last year in Canfield. This year there were some great displays of
tarantulas, mantids, Scolopendra giant centipedes, beetles, monarch and giant (silk
moth) caterpillars, not including my menagerie. This was my first time seeing giant
wood eating caterpillars, they were in a Ziplock bag eating white bread. The best
surprise was a friend brought up four green June beetles, Cotinis nitida, caught nearby.
At the bug festivals I enjoy the same old tarantulas, Asian giant centipedes, and
ghost mantids and wouldn’t be without them, but new encounters brought special
excitement. Hopefully you find something new and exciting in this issue.
