Infected beetle larva

Oak

Goliathus
Not sure if infected is the right word, but two of my p.muelleri larva has something like this, not sure what happened with them. It looks like this one is gonna start making a pupal cell soon, anyone got any ideas on what this thing is?

Looks like black spot disease!

If it is I'm sorry. Seperate it from the rest if you keep them together, a person recommends even a different room. Not pleasent .

Oak I know you're feeling, I lost all my D. Satanas to me not having the perfect soil. I think certain beetles species can be very picky, especially if their lineage is closer to wild caught than captive breed.

hm..that's weird..i heard black spots usually come from cockroach poop, but i dont keep any cockroaches nor i see any kind of cockroach in my house lol..

I noticed black spot disease occur in larva that were in substrate that was "too moist". Since black spot disease is a fungus I think that very moist sub promotes it's growth.

What stage is the larva in? When a larva gets it's very young they will usually die from it. But if a larva gets it late into L3 they may be able to pupate just fine.

LarvaHunter and I collected a Prioninae larva in the wild that developed a black spot a few weeks after. Later on the larva molted and the black spot was gone. But you could see where the black spot was on its old larva skin.

The rather irregular series of black spots look like physical damage to me rather than "black spot disease", someone or something has poked / bitten / scratched the larvae at some point. The black areas are analogous to a scab on human skin, the larva is trying to heal the wound. If the wound is too large then the larva may die from secondary infection or loss of heamolymph. If the wound does seal then there is a good chance that the larva will survive and grow normally.

Stag larvae kept in improper substrate look this way before they die. It is a symptom of malnutrition and prevention is the only cure.
