Could I raise stag beetles or scarabs off of rotten fig wood? Possibly? I want to experiment.
It's funny that people would use only oak. Some Lucanids prefer other types of trees. I use mainly oak, as it is what I find most in and it is the most common. White oak, Black oak, Water oak, or all! That's the typical mix.JKim said:I would say there are possibilities.. I have reared some of Dynastinae in substrate/mulch of hickory and was fine enough to use... (Miracle-Gro's Potting Mix) I think it is worthy to try if you have enough amount of beetles![]()
A lot of people only use oak, because they found the oak is capable to the beetles. It is not like only oak is possible... Depending on species, there are some can be reared in pine tree as well for the Lucanidae... If your breeding style adapted from Japan, or other Asian countries, I believe you would only tried Oak... By the way, I didn't mean it negatively.. It is just that Japan and other Asian countries are ahead on breeding skills/knowledges...
I found 4 lucanus larvae in pine recently. Pretty awesome! Oh... and hey! It's me, Ryan. I, for some reason, didn't connect the dots that you were on here! AWESOME!I have found both Dynastes and Lucanus larvae in well-rotten pine
Good to see you as well. I hope to have many species in culture soon. One of my Dynastes females mated. Now trying to breed the male with OTHER females. lol. And my Lucanus larvae (all 200 and some odd of them probably) are doing awesome!Hey Ryan - good to see you here!
