I would say there are possibilities.. I have reared some of Dynastinae in substrate/mulch of hickory and was fine enough to use... (Miracle-Gro's Potting Mix) I think it is worthy to try if you have enough amount of beetles

A lot of people only use oak, because they found the oak is capable to the beetles. It is not like only oak is possible... Depending on species, there are some can be reared in pine tree as well for the Lucanidae... If your breeding style adapted from Japan, or other Asian countries, I believe you would only tried Oak... By the way, I didn't mean it negatively.. It is just that Japan and other Asian countries are ahead on breeding skills/knowledges...
It's funny that people would use only oak. Some Lucanids prefer other types of trees. I use mainly oak, as it is what I find most in and it is the most common. White oak, Black oak, Water oak, or all! That's the typical mix.

Some species out west (ceruchus striatus)prefer conifers actually. I recently found some larvae in pine. It's hard for me to tell what they are. They almost look like Lucanus, but this would be outrageous!
