Dynastes tityus

I have a male/female D.tityus and they are in a 10 gallon tank with a mixture of rotten wood, dead leaves and some high protein dry dog food mixed in. All of this is crushed, pretty much as flakey as I could get it.

My question is: Some of the wood was already moist but not wet. I put about a 4" layer in the tank,

How moist should a keep the substrate and should the inside of the tank stay fairly humid? (where the sides have a little condesation on the side).

When I stick my finger through the substrate, it is a little moist but not much. I want to make sure that it does not get too humid in the tank but at the same time I want the substrate at the correct moistness.

Thanks in advance for any comments.

Hi Steve,

If the substrate isn't rather damp the female isn't going to lay eggs. One problem I see is the dog food is a supplemental food for the larvae, not a component of the egg laying substrate.

Compost is normally purchased from a garden store but if you forget the rotten wood and leaves the grubs will starve to death even if the adults lay eggs. The rearing methodology is pretty simple but there are many ways to end in zero survival.

Hi Steve,

Orin's right food should never be part of the substrate. Mites, other than being annoying, can kill in sufficient numbers.

How's your tank since your last post?

Joel
