Dung beetle breeding questions

Is it possible to substitute fresh waste with like... All-organic manure? Has anyone bred any species of dung?

Most of the beetles are happy to eat foods other than dung but they won't lay eggs without it.

very interested in this...

I know there have been at least three species introduced to California as part of a pest management program, Onitis alexis, Onthophagus taurus, and Onthophagus gazella, but I will have to create accomodations for them prior to actually collecting them. I have found a couple of these species in a ranch some 50 minutes from where I live, and have gotten permission to collect, it's just a matter of committing.

Has anybody kept these particular species and do you know of any other special requirements for them to thrive?

O. gazella are very easy to keep and breed - but you have to get your hands "dirty" (they will need fresh dung). Keep them in moist and deep substrate.
