Beetle Jellies

I'm looking to suppliment the diet of some of my inverts and was wondering, with the myriad of different flavors of beetle jellies do they each do different things and have different nutritional makeups? Or are they just a matter of personal preference?

Joel

Some of them are geared for stags and supposedly have added protein such as the lactose ones. The red ones are usually best for rhinos. I'm not sure if there is anywhere you can find exact details. However, they do all seem to be primarily the same thing, just different flavors.

Interesting. So similiar to the kumo gassen tournament for spiders each breeder has his/her own regiment for preparing their beetle for the tournament, ie- diet, exercise, training. What do you use for your own D.tityus colony?

To a point feeding is different for different types of beetles but there isn't a whole lot to it. I discuss diet for adult D.tityus in the book and I think my preference comes across (the last one listed) but I offer all the reasonable alternatives.

I did see the book and but I've seen two versions (covers) I should say. What's the major difference between the two? I want to get one but if they are very different I'll just get both.

Hey Joel,

Like Orin mentioned, the jelly w/ added protein is mainly used for Stags; usually for female Dorcus stags who need protein to induce laying. I've fed it to ground beetles, velvet ants and millipedes and it works well.

There are many other fruit/sugar jellies (banana, syrup, melon) that are geared more toward Dynastids or Cetonids who don't really need protein as adults. Other than that there are so many brands and flavors that is gets scary. I think the diversity can be compared to sports/energy drinks here: every one has something that the others don't that is supposed to make it better. Either way though (protein or not) jelly is so much easier and better than fruit.

Hi Joel,

The updated version of the book is the one you want. If you can find a copy of the old version, it might be neat for comparison's sake.

http://doubleds.org is the only place that I know of that sells them. If anybody else knows another US supplier, I'd like to know.
I saw their web site and it seems quite expensive! (more than 1$ per unit)

I can provide some at much cheaper price (and diffrent flavours, including hig protein content ones)!

White/proteins, Yellow/banana, Brown/sugar

Protein ones are good for all beetles. This helps females to lay more eggs (as egg deposit remove them proteins) and to live longer.

For jelly, you can email me at yves0071@orange.fr

I was wondering about how useful bee pollen might be to be added as a supplement for adult beetles ?

then I've searched a bit and saw it mentioned in some French forums - apparently there guys do practice adding it.

I don't know though how effective it is as a supplement. if anyone has any experience or any idea - please share.
