larvae at the surface

4 of my A.dichotoma larvae keep on going to the surface and i dont know why! i dont think its because of lack of oxygen because they were sorta active up there. i keep them in individual plastic bottles and in 70 degree farenheight weather. they were all medium to big individuals so it might be because of room inside the bottle but my other larger ones havent gone to the surface though. can u guys help me?

it is interesting - since I have A. (T.) dichotoma(us) larvae too, and they behave similarly.

my guess is: it is because of the temperature of substrate. after cooling it down a bit - they dig in again.

yeah thats what happened with mine. i opened the lids on their bottles and left the fan on to let them have some fresh air and they went back in. so the substrate must have been to hot for them. thanks kaidin for the advice!

I hope mine 3 T. dichotomus larvae would be Ok.

because today I have found in other containers that at least 2 larva of C. rinoceros are dead (completely blackened).

but T. dichotomus seems to be still crawling around and munching ...

There's a chance the substrate you're using isn't what they like (not all rotten wood or leaves is the same). Another possibility is too much dog food can use up oxygen in decomposition and cause them to search for air.

I guess it is the second reason. well, luckily only 2 of them are dead,

others somehow survived and growing.

perhaps I'll post some pics here.
