Hey, this is my first post here, and I plan on getting some rhino beetles and currently have been scrounging around for rotten wood in the forests, but I'm having a lot of trouble identifying the rotten trees without bark and leaves. Does anyone have any tips such as key characteristics of rotten Oak, or is it just a "its surrounded by hardwood so it should be fine", kinda dealio?

 
Without the bark, it can be really hard to identify types of wood. Oak has heartwood which should be slightly harder and off-colored from the rest of the log, but so do lots of other types of trees. I'd say looking at surrounding trees is probably the best way to tell.

 
Thanks, I had no idea about the heartwood, so I guess my best bet is just gonna be to compare both heartwood and the trees around me to the dead one, thanks!

 
Pine trees when they rot often rot into sheets, and so the wood peels off in sheets . Pine is also almost always orange when it's rotting, while hardwoods are generally whitish, brown, or grey.as you see more, you can identify them more easily and notice different traits.

 
Thanks, I've noticed that among a lot of dead trees, but I didn't put two and two until now, I gotta go out and collect the from the areas I've noted tomorrow now, haha.
