More by accident than intent, it seems I've hosted a small Lucanid grub to pupation by mostly leaving it be and bringing it white decomposed wood from its original log. I was timid about disturbing it and was sure it had died. Will post pics, very excited. I've seen Oregon stag beetle and rugose stag beetle in close proximity to its collection site.
First got interested in beetles when I found a wild desert ironclad clomping down the road in Barstow, then started finding Phellopsis porcata in the woods near my home. Not going to kidnap porcatas to experiment with any time soon - I can't imagine replicating the habitat - but I might try the blue DFBs or branch out with local stag beetles once I see what I currently have brewing.
