wandering larva

Oak

Goliathus
i have allomyrina dichotoma larvas that always wander around at the top of the substrate if placed individually in a cup, but if i keep all 10 larva together in a 15 Liter tub with about 11 L of sub in there, they do fine in it. Anyone know why this happens?

You are using over a liter of substrate per larva in the large tub, possibly you need to fill cups with more substrate, or use larger deli cups.

My strategus aloeus wander around at the top when they don't think they have enough food, which can be often, because they are little piggies.

You probably answered your own question. They must be a species that does best with some company.

Could he be getting ready to pupate? I know it's early in the year but last month my P. truncatus larvae were doing this and now they are all in the pupae stage.
