I have a dorcus alcides male (got him as an imago in January, unsure of age, supposedly 2-4/5 yr lifespan). In the past month, I've noticed he doesn't put his orange "tongue" parts away anymore, they're just always sticking out. Even when nudged gently with something, he doesn't slide them back inside. They look less "groomed" than before, like when you grind a felt-tip marker on paper for too long.
He seems fine and perky otherwise. Is this an issue? Sign of age?
