strategus antaeus

Last year I caught a Strategus splendens under a street light. I put her in a small Rubbermaid container with about 2-3 inches of 100% rotting oak substrate that I use for beetle larvae. A few days later I was getting ready to ship her when I found 4 eggs inside her container. This is the only experience I had had with getting an Ox beetle to lay eggs. The sub was moist but not excessively and she was kept around 75F in my house.

S. aloeus, or S. anteus?

I don't have any experience with S. aloeus, but I do with S. anteus.

The substrate mixture I use for the S. anteus larvae is 90 percent fine sand and 10 percent soil (the dark, "composty" looking top soil). I fill up my rearing tank with about 6 or 7 inches of that mix.

Then, I bury dog food and old, brown leaves in the center of the tank. Every few days, I dig up the old dog food and replace it with new dog food.

As for S. aloeus, I'm not sure. Maybe Orin can help out on that.

Cheers

For S. aloeus you can use a similar mix, I kept mine in about 40/60 sand/soil.

I was surprised how big the grubs can end up getting, was not expecting it.
