Pelidnota punctata larvae

I got some adults 2 months back (all of which have passed on now) and I just checked the substrate today to find 4 larvae! (there could be more, I only checked the loose part.) My question is; I have both rotting wood and root vegetables in there (yams, potatoes, just added some carrot.) The potato seemed like they ate the inside of it out. Could they possible need the wood too, or can I just remove it and give them all the root veggies they could ever want and need.

They eat only wood in nature.
What types of wood will the larva eat in the wild?

Also these beetles live here in San Antonio but have never seen one just like Dynastes tityus do they need special lights so they could be attracted like mercury vapor or UV blacklights?

Good news! I checked on them once at the beginning of the month and found 5 larvae!

Just changed the enclosure and found them clustered around the wood; all 5 are still alive with 2 that are huge!

I have a feeling they will pupate and eclose through the winter, but I won't have grape leaves to feed the adults.

Will they do alright on a diet of actual grapes and other fruit?

The word substrate could mean almost anything including perlite, vermiculite and potting soil. What was your substrate made up of?

If you caught the larvae they were likely L3 and had most of their required nutrients but since the adults didn't lay many eggs that would mean they were undernourished.
