Oak pellets

Thanks for the information
The thing about grill pellets is that they're "food grade" - since they're intended for cooking rather than heating, they don't have the potential for any harmful impurities.  Some varieties of fuel pellets might possibly be free of contaminants, but it's almost impossible to know.  In any case, fuel pellets might also contain some percentage of coniferous wood such as pine.

Forgive me for reviving an old thread, but I found this one really good for newbies to choose their pellets. I wanted to add that I have used Pit Boss brand oak pellets with good success - raising beetles from larvae to adulthood after double fermentation. It is labeled as "Post Oak Blend" containing post oak, white oak, and red oak. Next I will try their "Mesquite Blend" which says it contains mesquite and oak as another user found mesquite pellets, out of several other alternative hardwood species, to be a good alternative to the discontinued Traeger brand oak pellets. Both can easily be found at Walmart, although the Oak bag I have only found at Walmart 'Supercenters'.
