Need help with Beetle ID

Found this beetle in the Rocky Mountains last month. Just looked at my pictures from the trip and this one came out fairly good, wondering if anyone can ID it by sight. It isn't in the beetle books I checked (Audubon field guide to insects & some from European field guides- hey, it's all I have).

Any suggestions are appreciated

It looks like some kind of fungus beetle

I think their very common

More like Gibbifer californicus
