Making kinshi

I was wondering if anyone knows if I can use traeger oak pellets instead of sawdust for growing kinshi? The traeger oak pellets when wet smell different from wet sawdust. I am planning to grow turkey tail and oyster mushroom kinshi . Is there anything besides bread flour that I need to add to the wood?

Traeger is too small of particles I think anyway.

Pellets probably smell different because they're made up of sawdust that's undergone heat and pressure treatment--you're just smelling the difference between fresh, untreated sawdust and the pellets.

I've had no problems growing mushroom mycelium using the pellets with wheat bran added in. The particle size doesn't seem any smaller than sawdust particles I'm familiar with--it's quite less powdery than sawdust from the saws I've used.

You WILL need to sterilize or pasteurize the medium prior to inoculation due to the tendency of contaminants to grow faster than mushroom mycelium.

about how long does it take for the mycellium to colonize a 1.5 liter jar?

 
Mycellium should run at a rate of 5-10 mm per day, it should take 50 to 60 days. If you don't see growth within 10 days inoculation then you won't.

 
The pellets can be used as substrate after you expand and ferment them by mixing them with flour or bran and mixing it periodically over a course of a month or more. They are no good as substrate prior to fermentation because the wood particles would not have been broken down to a point where stag beetle and rhinoceros beetle larvae would use them.

You have to add water to the pellets to expand them into their sawdust state prior to use. Use warm or hot water to expand them as it's faster and you'll be more capable of discerning whether or not you've added enough water.

Using cold water makes them expand slower and you're more likely to add too much water.
