Live Oak OK?

Yes, I would say any oak trees are okay for beetles. Also, any hardwood substrate works fine. I don't know which beetle species you want to rear, but if it is Dynastes tityus, in your profile image, can be found in many different oak trees as well as many different hardwood species.

Ooh, thanks for the insight! Lucanus Elaphus. On a side note, what hardness of wood would be appropriate for them?

What hardness are you referring to? rotten log for laying eggs? L. elaphus can lay eggs in rotten logs, however, does not require rotten logs to lay eggs. If to be used, soft ones are recommended. Lucanus does not require anything rock-hard like any Dorcus hopei (in Asia) would need. I thought you were asking wood species for substrate. Have I misunderstood your original question?
