L1 Larve: Osmoderma Hermit Flower Beetle - 4 for $10

Well you won't be able to teach them any tricks. Do you have any experience with scarab beetles or flower beetles?

Very simple,  they can be fed old fruits. Their parents loved eating left over apples, peaches, bananas. Larva are pretty standard, they eat rotting hard woods.

Haha. I imagined a beetle jumping through a hoop. I meant as far as being handled goes, do they take it Okay?

I have no experience with scarab beetles, I do know how to care for certain beetle species so it's not like I would be going into it blind. :)

They are capable of emitting a strong smelling white substance - smells like formaldehyde. Their name - Osmoderma - means stinking skin. They dont smell putrid or rotten. They dont smell like feces or death. They smell like chemicals used to tan leather interestingly.

I am pretty sure only one gender is capable of emitting this strange smelling substance. They generally do it once and are done. The smell does not stain your skin or cause irritation.

Having a pet beetle means running the risk of it peeing on you anyway - all my beetles have peed on me at one point or another, so honestly having this substance squirted onto your hand isn't a big deal and won't kill you.

It terms of handling most beetles tend to either sit still or walk continuously, but expect this secretion when you pick them up.

One of these beauties randomly appeared in my apartment one day. I kept her for about a week and she was wonderful. I'd take her around with me to school and car rides and stuff. It'd be way too sentimentally charged for me to have them again, but I wanted to vouch for how precious they are. (I don't know how long they live because I let her go)

Orin's book says 3-5 months for beetles (grubs live longer)
