L1, L2, L3...huh?

L1 is a larvae that has just hatched from an egg

L2 is one molt above

L3 is about to pupate and become a beetle

Yeah, it is interchangable with Instar. If you're talking to tarantula or scorpion people, that's the term they'll use. L# seems to be far less used beyond beetles, which is kind of sad.. it's very good short hand. But, y'know, when in rome...

 
Additionally, L3 is a much longer instar than the others so don't be surprised by the wait from the beginning of L3 to pupation.
