How to excavate logs

Eudicella
I recently found a large number of rotten, dark black logs and stumps in an area, and saw several termites and a wood cockroach nymph when I peeled a small chunk off.

However, most of the wood was too hard to break off by hand.

Does anyone know of any methods or equipment for help in opening logs?

Will post images soon.

once i got a chain and hooked it to my suv, then i hooked it around the stump and dragged it out LOL…i found some small larvae but nothing of great interest

Small logs: hammer & chisel.

Large logs & stumps: a mattock pick axe usually works well, so long as the wood isn't very hard.

Hard logs & stumps of large diameter: sledgehammer & crowbar.

If wood is still so hard that you need to use a sledgehammer & log splitting wedge to separate it, there probably isn't much to be found in it (unless you're looking specifically for cerambycid or buprestid larvae).
