How often should stags and rhinos be mated?

I was wondering, for maximum egg laying of the female, how often you should let the female stag beetles mate with the female? Does the female only lay one batch per mating? Or is it like other animals where she can store the sperm for multiple batches?

That's a good question.  We can probably assume however, that most female beetles (and most female insects in general) only ever mate once, and that this is all they need.  I'd be interested to hear other hobbyists' input on this.  The only time I've ever bothered to have females mate multiple times is when they fail to lay fertile eggs after the first mating (which is rare).  For species such as D. tityus and other Dynastinae, a single mating is usually all that's needed.

What do you do when you don't have the time to constantly watch your pair if they have mated or not? My pair of stags have just been on top of eachother the entire day, and I have no clue if they have mated. I also don't want to leave them in together forever for fear of them hurting eachother.

I'm only familiar with how Lucanus elaphus and L. mazama mate.  I always gotten successful pairings in these species just by placing the pair together in a small (6 quart) plastic storage box (with food) for several days.  Mating usually occurred when the female was at the food.
