Fungus Gnats

I had a huge issue with fungus gnats with new substrate that I obtained a while ago. However, I changed the substrate to a batch consisting of the same stuff and heat treated it like no tomorrow. The gnat infestation was eradicated. Time goes by with no sight of fungus gnats in the containers whatsoever. However, while sitting in my HVAC class I frequently notice a fungus gnat flying around me. I see it circle around to the front of the classroom and shows no interest in anybody but comes in my direction trying to land on me. I then catch it and slam it on the table. This happened at least three times in a week in the dead of winter which makes me extremely confused. To make things weirder, I was on the computer in my room and notice one fungus gnat zooming past me only to land on my lamp. This is when I am frazzled and then check all of my larvae containers only to find out there is not one fungus gnat when before, I would have ran into at least 4 per container. I checked my two enclosures housing my Dynastinae imago with heat treated organic soil and there was no trace of anything. The only thing I can think about is the plants inside my house and the fact that I wear cologne called "BOD" that maybe they would be attracted to? I look up my problem on the internet and cannot find anything that answers what is going wrong with me. I feel like I am going crazy and am very paranoid. Please help!

Fungus gnats are most frequently found breeding in potted plants around the house. They're usually a sign that the soil the plant is being grown in has a high amount of decaying organic matter and that the plant may need to be replanted in fresh soil mix. They're likely attracted to you because they can detect the faint chemical cues you've recently picked up from being around soil.

They are also attracted to the scents released by advanced decay, but I'm sure you're not a zombie, right?

I would sure hope that I am not a zombie even though some days I feel like one.

I am a very healthy person that eats right, exercises, does not use mind altering substances anymore beside coffee, and does everything they are suppose to do so I just do not understand. I have the non - heat treated substrate stored in bulk in my garage but it is basically stored air tight in very cold temperatures and see no traces of anything inside. The thing is that in the school, there isn't one plant that I notice so I am freaking out that they are targeting me. Where the heck are they coming from?

Fungus gnats have a tendency to fly into dark spaces and crawl into things, so it's possible they were hanging out in your clothing or in your backpack.

Wow, thats so crazy but eases my mind a little bit. Then again, an ear hole is a dark place. I was having thoughts of them flying into my ear and laying larvae into my brain then hatching one leaving my body a breeding ground for maggots haha.
