Fungus gnat larvae with diabolical ironclad larvae???

I'm sure this has happened before, but last night I noticed a fungus gnat larvae in with my ironclad larvae! Has this ever happened to anyone? I tried to separate them but the larvae all hid when I was digging around. I'm worried about it trying to eat my ironclad larvae.

i dont think they eat larva, they were in my allomyrina dichotoma container and didnt do anything except annoy the crap out of them. So i had to kill them all of course..

Thanks. I wish there was an effective way to keep the numbers down! I know they are harmless, but they bother me. But of course, in order to keep certain beetles, they need the conditions that these flies thrive in.

You can heat the substrate to kill the larvae after you've removed your beetles and then keep the beetles and their substrate in a container with openings small enough to prevent fungus gnats from entering and infesting the substrate again.

Thanks, I may have to resort to that. I have a mesh lid on my tank that does nothing to keep the flies out. I'll have to research some of the netting/mesh-like fabrics I've seen others use.

I had millions of these in my beetle cupboard, but then they gone at some point. I was using sticky fly tape it was very good for it. Also using home made vinegar traps helped to keep down number of the fruit flies.

I had to resort to cutting out a section of a thin tank top undershirt and taping that over the air holes on top of my Dhh tub. In addition I had to use weather stripping to make sure the lid was sealed when closed. It was a major pain, and really only lengthened the time before they got back in. Seems they can find their way into the smallest of places. Good luck!

Yeah, I don't think there is any real way to get rid of them completely. I let the substrate try out just a bit, and still have the strips up. They seem to have decreased (for now).
