Hello! I am a brand new keeper and I currently have a L1-L2 Goliathus regius grub! I'm having some difficulty with feeding, every source I've read has said to soak the food before placing it in their little enclosure, but mine tends to mold within a day or two and attract mites. Does anyone have advice on how to fix this? I've been feeding my grub Hikari Cichlid Gold Mini Pellets because I already have the food and it's about 40% crude protein which I read is very desirable to feed for a big healthy grub. I soak it in minimal water so I don't soak out the nutrients then I put about 5 pieces in and I find that my grub really does eat most of it, but it starts to mold super fast and I find mites. So I guess a few questions for more experienced keepers on here are:
Am I going about feeding right? Is there any way to avoid this issue? Should I be giving better food, or is the one I'm currently feeding suitable? How often should I be feeding? How often can I change the substrate to avoid mites without stressing out the grub? I want to be the best grub caretaker I can so any and all advice is welcome. I currently have my grub in a 4oz deli cup and it seems to be the perfect size right now, and when he gets a little bigger I will obviously upgrade I'm just waiting to see a little more size because I read too large of an enclosure can waste their energy and they tend to get lost looking for food. He's gotten a tad bit bigger since I took that photo. I just want to be the best caretaker possible for this little guy and I'm very enthusiastic about getting it right, I'm just a teenager but I am an experienced reptile and tarantula and scorpion keeper so it isn't all new information but it's a little different for these guys and I'd love to be as well rounded and prepared as possible. Like I said, all advice is welcome, I'm so excited to watch my grub grow and I want to give him the best life possible!
