Beetle on a string

The strangest thing happened today... I was taking my P. Muelleri to school with me, so I tied a little string onto his mandible so that he wouldn't fly away while I showed my entomology class (I didn't want to take any risks;) As soon as I gently tied the little string on, the normally aggressive beetle let go of my hand and just sat there, freaked out or something! He became very docile and his antennae came out and started wiggling around. Anyone ever had this happen before? I know people like to tie strings to their legs and fly them (which seems kind of mean to me, personally) but I didn't want to damage him in case he did decide to take off.

i don't know if this is right, but when my dynasties tityus would feel defeated, they would just kinda sit there and not grip me…like another male was attacking him and i took him out so i guess he was feeling defeated? maybe this helps
