Nowadays, beetle jellies add things like protein and such, which are not really necessary

That's a really good question. I used banana and watered down syrup for one species of rhinoceros beetle. For the others, it was strictly jellies. The one on fruit/syrup died one month before the one raised on jellies only. They were also wild caught so I'm not sure if this played a factor.
