    Hemiphileurus illatus

Good news...my single Hemiphileurus illatus has now laid 9 eggs! I placed a piece of dog food in its container a few days ago and it ate the entire thing in 2 days. I have also been feeding it fruit and sugar-water mixture. Today I blended some of that mixture with some roach guts. Hopefully she...

    Food for Pelidnota lugubris?

Does anybody know what Pelidnota lugubris eats? I imagine it is leaves of some tree, but not sure which one. These were collected in Rio Rico, Arizona, USA. Here is a photo I took of this species:

    Female or Male P. truncatus

Phileurus is a rarely collected beetle in the United States. Photos on bugguide suggest that males have horns like this: http://bugguide.net/node/view/260447/bgimage However, the specimen I caught a few weeks ago in Arizona has very lobed horns (see attached, below). Can anybody describe the...

    My Tiger Beetle Video

Unfortunately, I could not get these beetles to reproduce. Anybody have any suggestions for substrates, etc. the next time I try them out? The species was Megacephala carolina. They supposedly do okay in captivity and are among the medium to large species in the US. The substrate consisted of...

    backyard leafhopper

Last summer I had one of those amazing little moments in my backyard where I find something I've never seen before and wonder where it came from. The photo doesn't do it justice, but this tiny little leafhopper had a pearlescent sheen over its already attractive wings.

    Water Beetle Aquariums

Thanks for the info. Manticora! My initial cage set-up: Previously, it looked like this (sorry, but video came out much darker on the PC than the camera appeared...oh, and the second tank of water beetles that are shown in the video are whirligig beetles). Basically, I was offering them sand...

We're just about ready to resume operations here. 2 months ago, this forum was attacked by Spambots. I've just about got the situation fixed here and hope to have the forum back up and running by Tuesday, December 9th.

    Egg eating mites

Check out the two little mites between the front arm and head of this Dynastes granti female! Apparently these are waiting around for her to lay her eggs so they can make an omelet!

    Mexican Rhino Beetle

My parents live in Mexico and caught these in a place I can't spell or pronounce, at about 11,000 elevation. They are pretty distinctive so I'm guessing somebody out there must know what they are. I'm going to be working with my mom to create a Bugs of Mexico website.

    Bug Dreams Anyone?

Seriously, am I the only person that dreams about bugs? I do it all the time. This morning I had a dream I was in my backyard (or somebody's...not sure). I was noticing holes in the ground and also saw some hollowed out sections in these wooden posts (laid horizontally). Suddenly, I found a nice...

    Water Beetle Sighting

After all this discussion about water beetles, I was REALLY excited to see my first local water beetle of the year (and maybe my last as I've never seen one here before). I was in my backyard setting up a badminton net for the kids (amazingly, it's going to reach 90 some degrees tomorrow). I've...
