Having trouble with Dorcus parallelus

Lucanus

Lucanus
Around June this year, I was able to acquire a pair of D. parallelus from Ryan

The male died shortly after, but the female survived.

On Oct. 5, I found two eggs in the substrate. Later, these eggs hatched and have become L2 now.

Problem is, my female hasn't laid any eggs since she laid these two eggs. Is this species suppose to lay small amount of eggs or does it need some special substrate for egg laying purpose?

What sort of substrate have you got in the tank? Do you have any logs or large bits of wood in there?

The substrate I use is a fermented sawdust made out of Oak. I also place a chunk of rotten wood in there (not sure which species it is).

How big is this chunk of oak? - I would suggest you need a fairly substantial chunk in there.
About 15 cm long and 6 cm thick. It's not the quality I wanted though. I tried to found better woods in my area but no success

Hmmm... A guy named Matsuda said they didn't require big logs... so it shouldn't be a problem. Some people say parallelus requires a very firm wood but he didn't use one that was so firm. It's unusual.

Seems that I need a shittake log for breeding. I can't find any logs in my area that are as good as shittake logs
