Beetle missing part of both middle legs.

So, a few days ago I found my male Dynastes tityus on his back in his enclosure. I flipped him over to find both of his middle legs were missing half way. I waited until morning to see if he had moved, but he didn't. He was in this enclosure alone. I ended up putting him in the freezer to put him out of suffering, as I assumed his death was near.

Has this ever happened to anyone before? I am unsure why his legs would be missing..

 
Yep! Happens to me most of the time. That's part of the reason why most of my dried collection is damaged.

No! It just happens when they get old. I'm guessing yours was in an egg laying container correct? I once had a Dynastes grantii female who emerged with almost no legs.

 
Do they eat more when close to death? My females seem to be devouring their food more than they used to. I am still finding some eggs, but not too many. I feel they are nearing death as well. I thought the females would go first, but guess not!

 
is the environment too dry or too wet?

some tityus can live 6 month after it's active.

and yes, the older they become, the easier the legs fall off.

Not too wet or dry from what I noticed. But I don't know how old he was when I got him anyways. He produced me some offspring so no worries.
