Switching Beetles From Tank To Tank

Today I woke up and and was doing my daily misting routine for all of my beetles. This is when I noticed a lifeless prized possession of mine. I kind of knew when I first got him that it wouldn't be long before he died. This is because he was weak and barley would clamp on using his tarsal claws when handled. Also, he would refuse to burrow like all of my other species. Anyway, in the habitat was an expensive substrate for egg laying along with a soft, heat treated, rotten log along with a jelly holder, hygrometer, and some moss. Im not sure if this guy had an illness that made him weak, or it was from old age. However, I do not want to let this expensive material go to waste. This is why I'm wondering if it is possible to switch some species from one habitat to this habitat to mate due to the reliable substrate without sterilizing first.

Sorry to hear about your loss.

From what you describe, it sounds like he just died of old age. So, I wouldn't be too concerned about introducing other beetles to this habitat.

However, it's really up to you to decide if you feel it's safe, or if you feel you should sterilize it.

Cheers

Beetles rarely get diseases and if they do it is usually easy to treat.

If the substrate was already sterilized before you do not need to sterilize it again, the stag probably died of old age anyways.

Beetle can die from stress or its age it is hard to tell unless you had them from the beginning. its a tragic, but they do not talk. happens all the time with beetles. cheer up !

in addition, for your tank" make sure you fill empty space with wood or something else to grab on to, so they can grab and get up in case they fall back or they wil die from stress and exhaustion.

His description suggests the cause was old age, and not getting stuck upside down too long.

Getting stuck upside down is usually a problem only for Homoderus I think.

They always mess up the enclosure when they are inside of it so there is plenty of items for them to grasp after that. You should see it now it got so messy in less than 10 minutes.
